VINTAGE CONDITIONS

The 1992 vintage in Padthaway was favoured by a mild Spring during flowering followed by a long cool ripening period throughout Summer and Autumn. The congenial vintage conditions gave rise to rich wines of deep colour, intense flavour and excellent structure.

WINEMAKING

The wine was vintaged entirely from shiraz grapes from the original 2.8 hectare vineyard planted in 1968 in Padthaway. The vineyard is on the shoreline of an ancient seabed and the soils are deep free-draining sands. The sands stress the vines partially giving rise to low yields of grapes that achieve full ripeness.

The grapes were destemmed and crushed to fermenters with active yeast culture. The grapes were fermented at moderate temperatures (20-22ºC) with peaks of higher temperatures early during the fermentation. The wine received extended maturation on skins to give maximum extraction of colour, flavour and tannin. Upon pressing the wine from the skins, the pressings fraction was blended with the free run wine after clarification.

The wine was matured in new American oak hogsheads for a total of 20 months and was racked and returned to the barrels after 8 months. The wine has been given the minimum of filtration and stabilisation before bottling and has received further bottle maturation before release.

COLOUR

Full depth. Deep cherry/crimson.

BOUQUET

Full intensity of ripe shiraz characters of mint, pepper and spices integrated with sweet oak nuances.

PALATE

Full bodied with generous plum and spice fruit. The wine has excellent balance of fruit and oak tannins which supports rich flavour to a long finish.

ASSESSMENT

The 1992 Lawson’s Padthaway Shiraz continues the excellent line of fine wines from this vineyard and further cellaring will reward the patient connoisseur.
