John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 1998

First made in 1982, the Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch was conceived as a flagship wine to be made in small quantities from the best fruit available from the estate's extensive Coonawarra Cabernet plantings. It has since become the definitive Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon - and is arguably richer and more concentrated than any other wine in the region. It is made only in years when grapes of extraordinarily high quality are available. Indeed, just one per cent of the top Cabernet grapes are used to make it.

Vineyard Region

Coonawarra

Vintage Conditions

Excellent vintage in Coonawarra that produced intense colours, rich flavours and ripe tannins across all varieties. Yields were average. An emphasis on stress management in the vineyard saw vines holding up well. A succession of dry years has resulted in drought tolerance which, when managed correctly in good soils, can produce very concentrated flavours.

Grape Variety

Cabernet Sauvignon

Maturation

Matured in new and one-year-old French oak.

Winemaker Comments:

Sue Hodder

Colour

Deep red/black

Nose

Complex aromas of blackcurrant, mint and tobacco. Underlying milk coffee notes arising from tight grained French oak give way to ripe, dark berries.

Palate

Full bodied palate with silky texture attributed to abundant but polished tannins. Flavours are in the riper spectrum with juicy hints of mint and smoky oak.

Impenetrable red-purple; rich, concentrated and luscious blackberry/blackcurrant/cassis fruit on both bouquet and palate has largely - though not entirely - subsumed the oak. Likewise, the tannins are there, but are in perfect balance.
