WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS:

COLOUR: Deep red with youthful purple hues.

NOSE: Complex aromas of bay, cinnamon and clove with tobacco, red currant and spicy vanilla.

PALATE: Flavours typical of Margaret River, the wine exhibits flavours redolent of blood plums, red berries and bay leaves, supported by fine, dusty French oak. The tannins are soft and fine with a velvety texture, finishing with spicy sweet flavours.

CELLARING: 8 years plus.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The south west of Western Australia stands apart as a wine making oasis and produces some of Australia’s finest wines. None finer than those of Houghton, Western Australia’s most awarded winery. From the cool climate vineyards, Houghton have developed wines with strong regional characteristics and varietal elegance.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE:

The 2000 vintage in Margaret River was long and cool, ensuring both sugar and flavour ripeness in the fruit. One third of the blend was fermented in 2, 5 tonne fermenters and underwent extended maceration on skins for 12 to 28 days. The ferment was aged for 16 months in 25% new and 75% 2 - 3 year-old French oak barriques prior to bottling.
